Whether you go during the warm season or the snowy winters, Lassen Volcanic National Park and its surroundings is definitely a paradise for nature lovers. Not only you will find wonders such as boiling pots and active volcanoes, but you will also be surrounded by 150 miles of hiking trails among forests, lakes, rivers, and a big etcetera that makes this place a hiker´s dream. So there is nothing more important to a couple of tired feet than being able to have a good night sleep. That is why we recommend Joseph and Jillian´s “Mill Creek Resort”, a short 20 minutes drive to Lassen Volcanic National Park main gate.
We got there after an extended snowy season and so the National Park main road was close making it hard to do most of the hikes. But the resort offers access to numerous alternative trails such as the Spencer Meadows hike, or the beautiful road trip around Almanor Lake (just 30 minutes away from the property), or even its own trail that departs from their camping ground and goes through an almost untouched forest by the creek (although the creek looked more like a huge river during this time of the year).
Joseph and Jillian bought this amazing and historical place one year ago. In its 11 acres, they offer beautifully remodeled cabins that can accommodate up to 6 people, and an RV Park and Campground. The cabins are fully equipped with a kitchen, a nice dining place, a private bathroom, and a very cozy room (our cabin was perfect for 4. There are bigger cabins available). You also have your own balcony and an outside table where you can prepare a nice barbecue while listening to the running water passing behind the cabin, and the birds singing above the trees. If you are lucky enough, you might even see some deer roaming freely.
Mill Creek Resort is pet-friendly and definitely kids-friendly: it has a great playground where our son spent a lot of our time there. So it´s a perfect place for families and especially for nature lovers.
We would definitely recommend staying there for some days not only to discover Lassen Park but also to enjoy being in such a nice place with two amazing hosts. They even have their own restaurant there so you don´t have to worry about cooking (even though you can do it in your own cabin).
We were only there for 2 days but it became one of those places where you don´t want to leave. Joseph and Jillian are wonderful people to be with. We shared a breakfast where we got to know each other a bit more and hear about their passion for this new project they are carrying on by themselves.
I share with you some photographs of the cabin, and if you are interested in knowing a bit more about the place go and check out their website: https://www.millcreekresort.net/
