Chapter 2: Foz de Lumbier, the house of the Bonesbreaker

When Dad told me that we were going to visit the house of the “bones-breaker”, I was scared. I did not want to go. As much as I knew that my mother had magical powers and can heal me with a “There there”, I did not see the reason why I should visit a man who breaks bones.

It was very hot when we got to the man’s house. It was huge, with giant stones on both sides, full of trees and a river that passed through the middle.

After walking and walking, we entered a very dark cave, and I thought that it might be the house of the bones-breaker. But there was nothing we could see. Just the end of the tunnel.

But we kept walking to the end of the cave and we saw no one.

Suddenly I woke up in the bed of the house on wheels. I do not know how I got there. I was watching caves and rocks, and now I was seeing a roof and the faces of my parents, who as soon as they saw me awake they told me: “Come, you’re going to miss the bones-breaker”. What a way to wake up!

As I left the house on wheels, I discovered a new landscape before my eyes. But now that landscape was not high. Now we were the ones above it. My father told me that we were in Foz de Arbayún and that we had visited Foz de Lumbier earlier that day.

All of a sudden, my mother said: “Look up there! Up on the rocks!” I looked only to make Mom happy, because the truth was that I was afraid. And that was when I saw the biggest bird I had ever seen. It was this big. It did not move its wings, but somehow the bird kept flying as if it were floating in the air. And its shadow was still larger than its own body and traveled very fast over the rocks. “That’s the bones-breaker,” Mom told me.

In the end, I had spent the whole day frightened of a beautiful bird that is named like that because it is the only bird of prey that throws the bones of their prey from high above the air so that they break on the rocks and are good to be eaten. Sometimes it seems that you should not be afraid of unknown things and encourage yourself to know them.
